Photographed with my iPhone 12 from my quarters on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. These Northern Lights are likely to be on display tomorrow night as well.

"Ring Nebula—M57"

Although visually small, the ring nebula is considered one of the most beautiful objects in the night sky. It sits in the constellation Lyra. This elliptical ring of gas is about 2300 light years from Earth.

The central star, a "white dwarf," spent most of its hydrogen over its lifetime and cast it off to create gas layers and form a planetary nebula. (Such nebula have nothing to do with planets. The term originates from the round shape observed by early astronomers.)

This is a common deep space subject of northern astrophotographers because of its availabilty, color, and form. If you check online, you will see a variety of attractive renditions, mostly dependent upon the combination of filters used.

It is located 7000 lightyears away in our Milky Way in the constellation Cepheus.

In the spring of 1972, I spent three months crewing aboard "Thai" with three friends enroute from Ft. Lauderdale to Central America.

While there, we explored the Honduras barrier reef (Mesoamerican barrier reef), visiting Cozumel, Belize, Guatemala, and several islands between.
